CertainTeed Shingle Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

CertainTeed shingle repair in San Diego typically runs $350 to $900 for a standard repair covering 10 to 40 damaged shingles, and most jobs are completed the same day we arrive with the right match in hand. If you’ve found granules collecting in your gutters after last winter’s Santa Anas, or a shingle tab lying in the yard after a wind gust off the coast, don’t ignore it. We stock CertainTeed shingle bundles and matching accessories on our trucks for exactly these situations. You’ll know the price before we touch your roof.

Most San Diego homeowners discover a failed CertainTeed shingle one of three ways: granules in the downspout, a visible dark patch on the roof where a tab broke loose, or water staining on a ceiling after the season’s first real rain. We also catch them during routine inspections before they become leaks. Either way, replacing a shingle is a repair we handle hundreds of times a year, whether in Clairemont, Chula Vista, El Cajon, or anywhere else in San Diego County.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

This guide applies to all three major CertainTeed architectural shingle lines you’ll find on San Diego roofs: Landmark, Landmark Pro, and Presidential Shake. It also covers the older XT 25 and XT 30 three-tab lines, which are now discontinued but still on thousands of homes built between the 1990s and early 2010s.

The first compatibility hurdle is color. CertainTeed names colors like Moire Black, Heather Blend, and Weathered Wood, but the visual result varies by production batch and sun exposure. If your roof is more than five years old, the original color has faded, and a fresh bundle from a different lot may never blend seamlessly. That’s why we bring physical samples to every estimate. We match the exposed shingle on your roof to the closest current offering, and when exact match isn’t possible, we’ll say so before ordering anything.

For OEM versus aftermarket, our honest position in San Diego’s climate is this: asphalt shingle repairs don’t benefit from third-party generics the way mechanical parts might. The roof surface has already weathered under California sun. A generic shingle lacks CertainTeed’s granule embedding and fiberglass mat density spec, which means it weathers differently than the shingles around it. Over three to five years, that patch becomes visible. For a repair of five shingles or fewer on a lower slope, aftermarket can work if budget is the overriding concern. For anything larger or on a front-facing roof plane, we recommend OEM CertainTeed, period.

Signs Your CertainTeed Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules collecting in gutters at the downspout. A shingle’s asphalt body is protected by ceramic granules. When they start shedding in serious volume, the mat is degrading from UV exposure. In San Diego, where we get over 260 days of direct sun, this failure is accelerated compared to coastal northern climates.
  • A shingle tab missing from the roof plane. Wind uplift can tear a tab loose along the self-seal strip, especially on south-facing slopes that get full afternoon sun. The adhesive CertainTeed uses is good, but it does fail with age and repeated expansion-contraction cycles.
  • Curling or cupping at the shingle corners. This is a moisture imbalance plus heat cycling. Once corners lift, wind can get under them. You’ll see it first on roofs with lower attic ventilation, which is common in older San Diego homes without ridge vents.
  • A dark stain spreading across the roof deck or ceiling below. By the time water shows inside, the shingle has already failed and the underlayment or decking has been getting wet for a while. This is the one that needs immediate attention, not a weekend project.
  • Exposed fastener heads or nail pops under a shingle. Nails can back out from the deck over decades as the wood expands and contracts. The shingle sits there, but the seal is broken and water can channel along the nail into the deck.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what CertainTeed shingle repair runs in San Diego, installed. Most structural roofers in this market charge $275 to $450 just to mobilize a crew, even for small repairs. We quote in the same range, with the difference being that every quote is written, itemized, and fixed before work starts.

  • Single shingle replacement (5 or fewer tabs): $350 to $500. Includes shingles, sealant, nails, and the labor of cleaning the seat, cutting the old shingle, and bedding the new one.
  • Standard residential shingle repair (10 to 40 shingles): $450 to $900 depending on the roof’s pitch, whether it’s one story or two, and whether the damaged area is accessible from the eave or needs staging.
  • Larger scatter repair (50-plus shingles across multiple slopes): $900 to $1,800 depending on access and how much walking the roof requires.
  • Add-ons if discovered: replace drip edge along the affected eave at $6 to $10 per linear foot, or replace underlayment if torn at $4 to $8 per square foot.

What’s included in every repair: the CertainTeed shingles themselves, new roofing nails, sealant on every exposed nail head, cleanup on the ground and in the gutters, and a written guarantee delivered before the crew leaves. Under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, if that repair fails inside a year, we return and correct it at no charge.

One honest paragraph about the real risks of working on a San Diego roof. Most San Diego homes have either clay tile or composition shingle pitched roofs, and even a 4-in-12 roof is steep enough that a fall from the eave is a serious injury. Add in southern exposure on a summer afternoon and a roof surface that’s 140 degrees or hotter, and you’re working in conditions that punish any misstep. We do not recommend homeowners attempt shingle repairs beyond a single tab at the eave, at gutter level, with a ladder properly tied off. Even then, the wrong nail pattern or wrong sealant can turn a $400 repair into a $4,000 ceiling and insulation replacement. We’ve seen it happen in La Mesa and National City more than once. The honest answer: if you can reach it from a ladder without stepping onto the roof, you can attempt the repair with the right CertainTeed shingle, roofing nails, and a tube of roofing cement, but you’re still working over your head at height. If the damage is beyond arm’s reach from the ladder, call us. Our crews work in this every week, we carry the right fall protection, and the written guarantee means if what we did fails, you’re not paying twice.
