Owens Corning Shingle Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Owens Corning shingle repair in San Diego typically runs $325 – $675 for a standard repair covering 10 – 20 shingles, flashing, and sealant work, and we stock Owens Corning-compatible shingles on our trucks for same-day installation. Most San Diego homeowners discover the problem the same way: a dark water spot on the ceiling after January rain, or shingle granules collecting in the gutter after a Santa Ana blow. The good news is that Owens Corning shingles are some of the most repair-friendly on the market, and a proper patch job restores the roof’s water-shedding ability without replacing the whole field.
We’re Tilehurst Roofing San Diego, an independent roofing contractor and not affiliated with Owens Corning. We carry Owens Corning shingles because they hold up well in San Diego’s specific blend of salt air near the coast and intense UV inland, and because matching them is straightforward when you know the product line.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
The two Owens Corning lines we see most often on San Diego homes are the Duration series and the Oakridge series, though we also work on the older Berkshire and discontinued PineTree lines from the early 2000s. Duration is Owens Corning’s premium architectural shingle with a thicker mat and a trademark SureNail strip; Oakridge is the mid-range architectural option with a slightly thinner profile. Both come in dozens of color codes, and this is where things get tricky.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Owens Corning changes color names and lot codes over time, so a shingle labeled “Driftwood” from 2012 will not match perfectly with a 2023 bundle of “Driftwood” from the same line. That matters more on a large repair patch in the middle of a roof than on a small corner fix. The other thing to know: Duration shingles are heavier and thicker than Oakridge, so you can’t swap one for the other mid-roof without creating visible ridges. We always pull an existing shingle and take it with us to our supplier to match color, weight, and exposure before we write the price. If a color has been discontinued for years, we’ll say so up front and price a close-compatible alternative rather than promising a match that won’t exist.
OEM Owens Corning shingles are what we recommend for visible repair areas, simply because they match better. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but for shingle repair, the savings rarely justify the color variation you’ll see every time you pull into the driveway. We stock the most common Duration and Oakridge colors in a half-dozen shades on the truck; anything rare, we source from a San Diego supplier the same morning.

Signs Your Owens Corning Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granule dust in the gutter or at the downspout base. Over time, UV light and salt air from San Diego’s marine layer break down the ceramic coating on the shingle’s top surface. When you see granule buildup that looks like dark sand but heavier, that’s the shingle’s first line of defense washing away.
- Curling or cupping shingle edges. San Diego’s inland valleys see big temperature swings, especially places like Santee or El Cajon in summer. The shingle’s mat expands and contracts, and once the nail strip loosens, the edges lift and catch wind. Once that starts, it doesn’t go back down.
- Water staining on the underside of the decking in your attic. If you can see dark streaks or soft spots on the wood sheathing, the shingles above have already let water through. The repair is still doable, but it’ll likely include decking replacement rather than shingle work only, and the price goes up.
- Missing shingles after a storm. Santa Ana events in fall and spring knock loose shingles that were already failing at the nail line. When you see bare roof felt or black paper showing, that’s the opening water is waiting for.
- Brittle or cracked shingle surface when you look up close. If a shingle crumbles at the edge when pressed, there’s no patch that saves it long-term. Replacement shingle repair is the only fix that makes sense.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Owens Corning shingle repair in San Diego, here’s what we charge:
| Repair Type | Typical Range (Installed) |
|---|---|
| Small patch, 3 – 8 shingles | $225 – $375 |
| Standard repair, 10 – 20 shingles plus flashing | $325 – $675 |
| Larger repair including underlayment and decking | $700 – $1,400 |
Every price includes the shingles, underlayment repair if the felt is torn, nail and sealant work, and labor. We write the price before we start, and that number doesn’t move unless we find decking damage we couldn’t see from the top side, and even then we’ll walk you through the reason before any new work is added. You’ll know the price before we touch your roof.
All our Owens Corning shingle repairs come with a written guarantee, which we hand to you before the crew leaves. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s part of the Kingswell Way: written price before work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and return if it fails.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look in the attic for water stains, clear any debris from the roof edge, and check the gutters for heavy granule buildup. That’s useful, and we can work from your notes when you call. Where DIY goes wrong is on the roof itself. Walking a San Diego roof with a steep pitch, especially a tile or shake transition, is how homeowners end up in the emergency room. Shingle repair also needs the right nail placement and sealant technique, or the first Santa Ana wind will rip the new patch right off. That’s not a shot at your skills; it’s the reason roofing remains a licensed trade. If you’re on the fence, call (619) 393-3877 and describe what you see. We’ll tell you if it’s urgent, what it likely costs, and whether it’s worth a visit. The estimate is free.
FAQs
How long do Owens Corning shingles last in San Diego? Duration shingles generally last 20 – 25 years in San Diego’s climate, while Oakridge runs closer to 18 – 22 years, with coastal homes in Ocean Beach or La Jolla seeing slightly shorter lifespans due to persistent salt spray. Repair work on a 15-year-old roof is usually worth doing; on a 22-year-old roof, we’ll say honestly when full replacement is the smarter money. Call (619) 393-3877 and we’ll give you a straight read.
Can a single failing shingle be repaired, or do I need a full section replaced? A single shingle can be repaired in the short term, and that’s often the right fix after one blow-off event. If three or more neighboring shingles are failing, the patch will look and perform like a patch, and we’ll recommend replacing the whole slope section. We’ll price both options and let you decide; the estimate is free either way.
How long does an Owens Corning shingle repair take? Most shingle repairs are completed in the same visit, typically 2 – 4 hours from setup to cleanup. Larger repairs that include underlayment or decking work may take a full day. We’ll give you a written time estimate before work starts, and we stick to it.
Do you stock Owens Corning shingles on the truck? We stock the most common Duration and Oakridge colors on the truck for same-day repair. For rarer colors or the older Berkshire and PineTree lines, we source from a San Diego supplier the same morning, usually by 10 a.m., and in some cases, we’ll have to let you know a precise match is no longer manufactured and talk through the closest alternatives. Call (619) 393-3877 and we’ll check our current truck stock while you’re on the line.
