Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Owens Corning-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials throughout San Diego, with most deck repair jobs running $850 to $1,600 installed depending on how much plywood needs replacing and how far the water got. We carry Owens Corning Deck Defense, ProArmor, and RhinoRoof underlayments on the truck, so most water-intrusion repairs are done in a single visit. You’ll usually discover the problem the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling after the first real rain, or a soft spot underfoot when you step near a vent pipe. By the time you see a stain inside, the underlayment has already been compromised and the decking beneath it has been soaking long enough to start delaminating.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
If your home has an Owens Corning shingle roof, you’re almost certainly dealing with one of three underlayment lines: Deck Defense, ProArmor, or RhinoRoof. Deck Defense is the synthetic entry-level product, ProArmor is the mid-weight with a slip-resistant surface, and RhinoRoof is the heavyweight with the highest tear resistance. The underlayment is not tied to a specific shingle model (Duration, Oakridge, or Woodcrest all install over the same underlayment lines), but the decking beneath is universal: Owens Corning’s installation specs require 3/8-inch or thicker plywood or OSB, and San Diego’s coastal humidity means we regularly replace decking that meets the old 3/8-inch minimum but has swelled and pulled at the seams. One compatibility gotcha we see often: if your home was built before 2000 in neighborhoods like Clairemont or Allied Gardens, there’s a good chance the original builder used 3/8-inch CDX plywood, which Owens Corning’s current warranty language says is below the recommended minimum for new installs. We will flag that during the estimate rather than cover it up, because a new underlayment over bad decking just puts a fresh tablecloth on a wobbly table.
As for parts: we use genuine Owens Corning underlayment when the job calls for it, but we also stock equivalent aftermarket synthetics from GAF and CertainTeed when the original product is no longer available or when a different material genuinely fits the roof pitch better. We will tell you the difference in writing before ordering anything.

Signs Your Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling or upper walls. This is the loudest signal. Underlayment is your last line of defense under the shingles; if water is reaching your drywall, the underlayment below that section of roof has been saturated for a while, and the decking is wet enough to hold a footprint.
- A soft or spongy feel underfoot on the roof. If you walk the roof and a spot gives under your weight, the plywood or OSB has lost its structural grip. In San Diego’s dry-rotted coastal valleys like Spring Valley, this often comes from years of trapped moisture wicking through seams, not a single storm.
- Crumbling or delaminating edges at the eaves. Pull back a shingle tab at the gutter line and look at the deck edge. If the plywood plies are splitting apart like wet cardboard, the underlayment above it has been allowing water to sit at the roof’s most vulnerable line.
- Wrinkled or torn underlayment visible in the attic. In homes with open-rafter attics, you can sometimes see the bottom of the decking and the felt. If the underlayment looks like it has waves, tears, or mold staining, it has absorbed water and lost its waterproofing continuity.
- Ceiling stains that reappear after a shingle repair. This is the sign we hear about most from San Diego homeowners who have already spent money once. A contractor patches shingles but never opens the deck. The shingles are fine; the underlayment beneath them is shredded. You need a deck and underlayment repair, not another shingle call.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, Owens Corning underlayment and deck repair runs $850 to $1,600 as an installed job for most residential roofs. The low end covers a single 4×8 sheet of decking replacement and a partial underlayment patch around a vent or pipe boot. The high end covers two to three sheets of plywood, full underlayment replacement across the repaired section, and resealing of all flashed penetrations. Every estimate we write includes the parts, labor, water barrier, fasteners, and cleanup. If the roof has multiple soft spots or we find rot running under the ridge, the price moves with the material, and you will see that number before we start. There is no change order at the end of the job. The Deck Defense and ProArmor synthetics we install carry Owens Corning’s published limited material warranty, and our own labor is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a year, we return and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your roof from the ground or a ladder without touching the decking: look at the eave edges, check the attic for stains, and map out where the ceiling spots line up. What you should not do is open the decking yourself. Cutting into the roof’s waterproofing layer, even for a look, is where we see DIY jobs turn into $3,000 repairs. You also should not re-nail loose decking or patch underlayment from the top side; without proper underlayment run-lap and seam taping, water tracks sideways along the deck seams and the original problem comes back wider. If you can see a soft spot from the attic, call us at (619) 393-3877 and describe what you see. We will give you a written price to open, assess, and fix it, and you will know the number before we touch your roof.
FAQs
Owens Corning synthetic underlayments like Deck Defense and ProArmor are rated for the life of the shingle when properly installed, but in San Diego’s combination of UV exposure, coastal salt air, and long dry spells followed by fast winter rains, the decking below often fails first. We rarely see underlayment wear out on its own; we see it torn by workers, punctured by debris, or waterlogged from failed flashing above it.
Small tears around vents or pipes can be patched if the surrounding material is still sound, but if the underlayment is saturated or the decking beneath has gone soft, patching just seals moisture inside. We will tell you which situation you have before we quote anything. Patches save money only when they stop water; a patch that traps water is worse than no patch.
Most single-sheet deck repairs with underlayment replacement take one workday. Two or three sheets with re-flashing takes a day and a half. We bring the underlayment, decking, fasteners, and flashing on the truck, so there is no mid-day run to the supply house.
Yes. Our San Diego trucks carry Deck Defense and ProArmor in 10-square rolls, plus RhinoRoof on request. We also carry CertainTeed and GAF synthetics for roofs where a different underlayment genuinely fits the pitch and exposure better. If you need a specific product, tell us when you call and we will confirm before the crew rolls.
