Boral Ridge Vent Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Boral ridge vent installation in San Diego typically runs $650 to $1,200 installed, and we stock Boral-compatible ridge vent material on our trucks, so most swaps happen in a single visit. A failed ridge vent rarely announces itself loudly. What you notice first is a bedroom that stays hot no matter how long the AC runs, or a musty smell in the attic in August. By the time those symptoms show up, the vent has usually been degrading for a year or more under San Diego’s dry sun and salt air.

Most homeowners discover the failure during a heat wave, when the attic becomes unbearable, or during a rain inspection when they spot water staining along the ridge line. The good news is that ridge vent replacement is a same-visit job in most cases, and the price is in your hands before we touch the roof.

Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral ridge vent profiles are built around a low-profile external baffle system that sits under the ridge cap, and the two line types we see most in San Diego are the Boral Vent-A-Ridge and the Boral Rapid Ridge. The difference matters because Vent-A-Ridge uses a fiber-reinforced core, while Rapid Ridge uses a rigid PVC baffle with a narrower throat. You can identify what you have by looking at the end of the ridge cap with a pair of binoculars. If you see a black mesh strip about 7 inches wide, that’s the Vent-A-Ridge style. If the visible strip is closer to 9 inches and sits flatter, you’re likely looking at a Rapid Ridge profile.

The compatibility gotcha we run into constantly is this: Boral ridge vent is not interchangeable with generic big-box ridge vent, even when the measurements look close. The vent throat width has to match the slot cut in your roof deck. If a previous contractor installed a universal vent over a Boral-specific slot width, you’ll get reduced airflow or, worse, water intrusion at the first hard rain. We carry both Boral OEM profiles and Universal RIDGE VENT from Air Vent and Lomanco, which we use when the Boral profile is discontinued or when the existing slot width dictates a different baffle. Our rule is always to match the existing ventilation opening first, then choose the product.

Signs Your Boral Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic temperature spikes in the afternoon. San Diego sun beats directly on the ridge line, and when the baffle material degrades, it collapses and chokes the exhaust pathway. A healthy vent should let attic air out all day, not trap it like a closed oven.
  • Water stains on the ceiling near interior walls. This is the classic failure when rain comes in sideways. Deteriorated Boral vent baffles let wind-driven rain into the attic, and the water travels along trusses before it shows up as a brown ring on your drywall.
  • Visible cracks or crumbling along the ridge cap. That’s UV degradation, and it accelerates fast once it starts. Boral’s material is tough, but two decades of direct exposure will eventually break down the plastic matrix. If you can see cracked vent material from the ground, the failure is well underway.
  • Higher cooling bills with no change in weather. When the ridge vent stops pulling air, the attic becomes a heat sink that radiates down into your living space all night. Your AC works harder, and the bill shows it.
  • Birds or rodents at the ridge line. A cracked or separated vent baffle is an open doorway. We’ve pulled everything from starlings’ nests to roof rats out of failed ridge vents in Chula Vista and El Cajon.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-story San Diego home with 30 to 40 linear feet of ridge line, Boral ridge vent replacement runs $650 to $950 installed. Two-story homes or steep-pitch roofs push that to $1,000 to $1,200 because of access equipment and safety setup. If the existing vent slot is the wrong width or the decking under the ridge cap is rotted, that adds material and labor, and we’ll show you exactly what we found before we do anything.

Every ridge vent replacement we do includes the vent material, new fasteners, removal of the old vent and cap, installation of the new system with the correct slot width, and a written guarantee handed to you before the crew packs up. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work for a full year. If the vent fails inside that window, we come back and fix it at no charge. No fine print, no phone tag.

You’ll know the price before we touch your roof.

DIY or Call Us?

Ridge vent replacement means working at the highest point of your roof, which is where falls happen. We don’t recommend it as a weekend project. What you can safely do is inspect from the ground with binoculars and note any visible cracks, gaps, or missing cap shingles. You can also check your attic on a hot afternoon. If the air near the ridge feels stagnant and you can’t see light coming through the vent slot, that’s worth a call.

Where DIY goes wrong is the slot cut. If the opening is too wide, you’ll get water intrusion. Too narrow, and you might as well not have a vent at all. We’ve repaired several handyman ridge vent jobs where the slot was cut freehand and the vent ended up doing nothing except leaking. If you’re seeing the symptoms and you’d rather not spend a Saturday on a ladder, call us at (619) 393-3877 and we’ll take a look.
