CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vents throughout San Diego, and most installations run between $450 and $900 for a standard single-family home, depending on the linear footage of your ridge line. We carry the vents on our trucks, so in most cases we can complete the swap the same day we diagnose the problem. Most homeowners discover their ridge vent has failed when they climb into the attic on a hot afternoon and realize it feels like a sauna, or when they spot shingle granules collecting in the gutters directly below the peak.
Ridge vents are the quiet workhorses of your roof’s ventilation system. They run along the peak and let hot, moist air escape continuously, without moving parts or electricity. When they fail in San Diego’s climate – where attic temperatures routinely hit 140 degrees in August – the damage shows up fast: warped decking, premature shingle failure, and utility bills that keep climbing. Greg Holloway and our crew have replaced hundreds of ridge vents across the county, from Clairemont to Chula Vista, and the failure patterns are consistent.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes a few ridge vent lines that we work with regularly: the Mountain Ridge, ShingleVent II, and the Filtered Ridge Vent. The Mountain Ridge is the most common we see on San Diego homes because it’s shingle-over style, meaning it disappears into the roofline. The ShingleVent II is a lower-profile option, and the Filtered Ridge Vent includes an internal filter that helps keep wind-driven rain and embers out – a real consideration in fire-prone areas of East County.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: the vent itself rarely fails. What fails is the installation method – specifically the width of the slot cut into the roof decking underneath. CertainTeed specs call for a specific slot width per model (typically 1-1/2 to 2 inches depending on ventilation needs), and if a previous contractor cut it too narrow or too wide, the vent underperforms regardless of the product quality. We measure the slot as part of every ridge vent job. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, for ridge vents we recommend staying with CertainTeed product on CertainTeed roofs – the profile heights and nail-line dimensions are specific enough that mixing brands creates gaps. We also stock compatible ridge venting for GAF and Owens Corning roof systems, but we match the brand to your existing roof.
Tilehurst Roofing San Diego is an independent roofing contractor, not affiliated with CertainTeed. We install their products because they hold up in our climate, but we’re not a factory branch.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic heat that never dissipates. When you open the attic hatch at 7pm in July and get hit with a wall of hot air, the vent isn’t moving air. The cause is usually a crushed vent channel or an undersized slot cut into the decking, not the roof surface you can see from the street.
- Shingle granules collecting below the roofline. Granule loss near the ridge often means the ridge cap shingles are deteriorating faster than the rest of the field shingles. That’s a classic sign of heat baking upward with no escape path.
- Visible cracking or brittleness on the vent material itself. CertainTeed vents are made from a polypropylene that resists UV well, but 15-plus years of direct San Diego sun will eventually make the exposed edges chalky and brittle to the touch.
- Water staining on the ceiling near exterior walls, not directly under the peak. That pattern usually points to condensation forming when warm, moist attic air can’t exit and instead settles along the cooler eaves.
- Higher cooling bills without a change in usage. If your AC runs the same hours but May through October got more expensive, your attic ventilation has likely degraded. Ridge vents move a surprising amount of heat when working correctly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical San Diego home with 30 to 40 linear feet of ridge, expect to pay $450 to $900 installed. Homes with multiple ridge lines, steep pitches, or tile roof transitions run higher. The pricing breaks into two parts: the vent material itself runs roughly $4 to $7 per linear foot for CertainTeed product, and installation runs $10 to $18 per linear foot depending on access, roof pitch, and whether we’re recutting the decking slot.
Every quote we give includes the written price before any work starts – you’ll know the full number before we touch your roof. The quote covers removing the old vent and ridge cap shingles, inspecting and recutting the decking slot if needed, installing the new CertainTeed vent, reinstalling ridge caps, and hauling away debris. It also includes our written guarantee on the repair, delivered before the crew leaves. If the fix fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do one thing yourself: pull the attic ladder down on a hot afternoon and feel whether air is actually moving near the peak. That’s a diagnosis, not a repair, and it’s useful information to have when you call us. What you shouldn’t do is get on a sloped roof with a nail gun and try to peel back ridge caps yourself. Roof work at the peak means working on the steepest part of the roof with the most exposure, and a fall from the ridge is the most dangerous scenario in residential roofing. The materials aren’t the hard part – the decking slot measurement, proper nail placement, and matching the vent profile to your shingle height are where homeowner repairs go wrong, and by then you’ve already been up and down a ladder a dozen times.
If you want an honest look at whether your vent is working, call (619) 393-3877. We’ll measure the slot, check the current vent’s condition, and give you a written number before anything gets replaced.
FAQs
A properly installed CertainTeed ridge vent lasts 20 to 25 years in San Diego’s climate, which is roughly the life of the shingle roof it sits on. UV exposure is the limiting factor here – the polypropylene holds up well, but our intense, cloudless summers shorten the lifespan compared to coastal Pacific Northwest installations. If your roof is 15-plus years old and you’re seeing granule loss near the peak, plan on replacing the vent when you replace the shingles. Call (619) 393-3877 and we can tell you if you can wait or if it’s worth doing now.
Small repairs are possible – a 2-foot section of damaged vent can be spliced out and replaced without redoing the entire ridge line. But if the vent material is brittle across multiple sections, or if the decking slot underneath was cut wrong in the first place, a patch is throwing good money at a problem that will come back. We’ll tell you which situation you have before quoting anything. For an exact assessment, call (619) 393-3877 – estimates are free.
Most CertainTeed ridge vent installations in San Diego take 3 to 5 hours from setup to cleanup. That includes removing old ridge caps and vent material, checking and recutting the decking slot, installing the new vent, and reinstalling caps. Steeper roofs or multiple ridges add time, but almost every ridge vent job is a one-day project.
We stock CertainTeed Mountain Ridge and ShingleVent II on our trucks, along with compatible GAF and Owens Corning ridge venting. That means when we diagnose a failed vent, we can typically complete the swap the same day without a second trip. If you have a less common CertainTeed line, like the Filtered Ridge Vent, we can still source it quickly – but we’ll always know the price before we order anything, and you’ll know that price before we start the job. Call (619) 393-3877 for a free estimate on your ridge vent.
If your ridge vent is underperforming or you’re seeing signs of failure, don’t wait for a hot attic to turn into a bigger problem. Call Tilehurst Roofing San Diego at (619) 393-3877. You’ll get a live person, a straight answer, and a written price before anyone touches your roof. You’ll know the price before we touch your roof.
