Why San Diego Homeowners Choose CertainTeed Roofing
Tilehurst Roofing San Diego provides independent CertainTeed roofing service across San Diego County, from coastal neighborhoods like Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach to inland communities like Mira Mesa and El Cajon. We install and repair CertainTeed’s full architectural shingle lineup, including the Landmark and Presidential Shake series, and we do it with a written price in your hands before any work starts. We are not affiliated with or authorized by CertainTeed. We’re an independent service provider, which means we recommend the right fix for your roof, not the fix a manufacturer prefers. Call (619) 393-3877 and you’ll know the price before we touch your roof.
San Diego’s roofing market is unusual in one specific way: the same brand of shingle fails differently depending on which side of the I-5 your home sits on. West of the freeway, the coastal marine layer keeps roofs damp and algae-prone. East of it, the sun bakes shingles until they crack. CertainTeed makes good material, but no shingle ignores San Diego’s UV for fifteen years without showing symptoms. Greg Holloway, owner of Tilehurst Roofing San Diego, learned roofing in a construction trades program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before making San Diego his working territory. He’s seen firsthand what CertainTeed roofs do in this climate, and he’ll tell you the truth about repair versus replacement before quoting a number.
Why Trust Tilehurst Roofing San Diego for Your CertainTeed Roofing?
Our crews work on CertainTeed roofs every week across Certainteed in San Diego‘s coastal and inland microclimates. We know exactly how CertainTeed’s architectural shingle lines fail under UV, salt air, and Santa Ana winds, and how to repair them without voiding the rest of the roof. That matters because a roofing company that treats every shingle the same will miss the specific failure mode on your Landmark roof in Rancho Bernardo or your Presidential Shake roof in La Jolla.
We keep genuine CertainTeed components in stock when matching existing roofs matters: ridge caps, starter strips, hip and ridge accessories, and the color-matched shingle blends that keep a repair from looking like a patch job. When an exact OEM match isn’t the right call, we’ll say so and explain what is. Greg Holloway built Tilehurst Roofing San Diego on The Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails. We also offer Chula Vista Certainteed service with the same standards. Every repair gets a written guarantee before the crew leaves the property. If a repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

Common CertainTeed Roofing Problems We Fix in San Diego
CertainTeed makes several distinct product lines, and each one has its own failure pattern in San Diego’s climate. Here are the five issues we see most often, and why they happen.
- Granule loss and premature balding on Landmark shingles. Landmark and Landmark Pro are CertainTeed’s workhorse architectural shingles. On south-facing slopes and in sun-exposed valleys, San Diego’s UV breaks down the asphalt binder holding the ceramic granules. Within twelve to fifteen years, we often see balding patches where the fiberglass mat shows through. If you see granules collecting in your gutters after every rain, you’re watching the early stage of this failure. The fix depends on how far it’s gone: isolated balding can sometimes be addressed with targeted shingle replacement, but widespread granule loss across multiple slopes usually signals replacement time.
- Cracking and cupping of Presidential Shake tabs near the coast. Presidential Shake and Presidential Shake TL are CertainTeed’s premium thick-shake-look lines. The tabs are much thicker than standard architectural shingles, which makes them more rigid. Combine that rigidity with salt air and the thermal cycling that happens when the marine layer burns off every morning, and the tabs start to cup upward and crack along the granite-surfaced ridges. We see this regularly in Ocean Beach and Point Loma. It’s not a manufacturing defect. It’s what happens when a thick laminated shingle lives in salt air for a decade.
- Nail pops and lifted shingles on Grand Manor after Santa Ana events. Grand Manor is CertainTeed’s heaviest, most expensive architectural line. The extra weight puts more load on the fastening system. When a Santa Ana wind event hits in October or November, loose or improperly driven nails allow individual shingles to lift and catch the wind. The result is a shingle that rides up off the roof plane and stays there. We fix this by re-fixing the lifted shingle with proper nail placement and checking the surrounding field for other loose fasteners before they fail the same way.
- Flashing failures at wall and chimney intersections. This isn’t unique to CertainTeed, but we see it often on older CertainTeed installs. Step flashing at a sidewall or chimney needs to be integrated with the shingle course in a specific order. When it isn’t, water wicks under the shingle edge and rots the decking below. In San Diego, this shows up as a brown stain on the ceiling under a wall intersection, usually after the first real winter rain. The fix is pulling back the shingles, replacing the step flashing in the correct sequence, and re-laying the shingles with the right overlap.
- Pipe boot cracks at plumbing vent penetrations. This is the most common small leak we trace on CertainTeed roofs in San Diego. The rubber collar around the plumbing vent pipe dry-rots from UV exposure within eight to ten years. Once it cracks, water runs straight down the PVC and onto the ceiling below. Our tech repaired exactly this on a 2018 Landmark roof in Clairemont. The homeowner saw water staining at the ceiling below a plumbing vent. We found the CertainTeed pipe boot cracked at the rubber collar. We replaced it with a storm-collar style vent boot and resealed the surrounding shingles, stopping the leak the same afternoon.
CertainTeed Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We use genuine CertainTeed components when matching existing roofs matters: ridge caps, starter strips, and the exact shingle color blend so the repair doesn’t announce itself from the street. But we’re honest when an exact match isn’t available or isn’t cost-effective. A discontinued CertainTeed color can take weeks to source, and in many cases a quality aftermarket underlayment or vent boot is actually the better long-term fix. CertainTeed’s own warranty covers the shingles. It doesn’t cover the underlayment, the flashing, or the workmanship. So when choosing between an OEM accessory and an aftermarket one, we pick the one that will keep water out of your house longer.
Our repair-versus-replace call is straightforward. If a roof is past sixty to seventy percent of its expected life, or the decking is compromised, we recommend replacement over repeated patches. Patching a roof that’s near the end of its serviceable life just costs you more money next year. We’d rather tell you the truth now. Call (619) 393-3877 for an honest assessment, and you’ll get a written line-item price before any work is approved.
Our CertainTeed Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. Our crew walks the roof surface, checks the attic for decking damage, and identifies the specific CertainTeed failure mode. We’re looking for granule loss patterns, flashing sequencing errors, boot collar cracks, and wind-lift fastening failures, not just the obvious hole. We document what we find with photos.
- 2
Written price. Before any work starts, you get a written line-item quote that shows the cost of materials, labor, and any decking replacement. The number you see is the number you pay. No change orders at the door.
- 3
Repair or install. We use OEM CertainTeed components for matching work and quality aftermarket parts where they’re the better long-term choice. Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed, so you know exactly who’s on your roof and why.
- 4
Testing. After the repair, we water-test the area and confirm the fix held. We don’t pack up and hope for the best.
- 5
Written guarantee. Every repair gets a written guarantee before the crew leaves the property. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

AfterCertainTeed Products We Service & Install in San Diego
We install and repair the full CertainTeed architectural line for San Diego homes, with Certainteed service in Encinitas and throughout the county: the Landmark series including Landmark Pro and Landmark TL, Presidential Shake and Presidential Shake TL, Highland Slate, and Grand Manor. We stock the common accessory lines locally: CertainTeed ridge caps, starter strips, hip and ridge caps, and the color blends most often spec’d in San Diego County. For specialty colors, we order direct and schedule the work around the delivery. We also carry CertainTeed-compatible underlayment, ice-and-water shield, and vent boots so a small repair doesn’t wait on a distributor.
We Also Service These Brands
CertainTeed is one of seven manufacturers we work with. We also install and repair GAF, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, and Boral. The product should fit the home, not just what happens to be in the truck that week.
FAQs – CertainTeed Roofing Service in San Diego
No. We are an independent CertainTeed service provider, not a CertainTeed-authorized or factory-certified contractor. That’s an honest distinction, and it means our recommendations are based on what’s right for your roof, not what a manufacturer’s program requires. If an aftermarket underlayment is the better long-term fix for a San Diego coastal home, we’ll tell you that. Call (619) 393-3877 to talk through your roof’s situation.
Yes, when it matters. For shingle replacements and ridge cap work, we use genuine CertainTeed components so the repair blends with the surrounding roof and preserves the remaining lifespan. For underlayment, vent boots, and some flashing products, we’ll recommend the part that performs best in San Diego’s climate, whether that’s CertainTeed OEM or a quality aftermarket brand. We’ll show you the difference in the written quote.
Most single-issue repairs, like a leak at a pipe boot or a small flashing repair, are done the same day. Larger jobs like partial shingle replacement on a Landmark roof or valley reconstruction can take one to two days depending on the scope and weather. Replacement of a full architectural roof in San Diego typically runs five to ten working days depending on access and decking condition. We’ll give you a window before the work starts, and our crews show up in it.
Check your gutters. Landmark shingles shed some granules in their first year as the excess surfacing works loose. That’s normal. But if you’re seeing granule accumulation after every rain and the shingle surface looks smooth or shiny in patches, that’s the asphalt binder oxidizing and the fiberglass mat starting to show. On south-facing slopes in San Diego, this often shows up first in valleys and at the bottom edges of shingle tabs. At that point, the shingles are losing their UV protection, and the failure accelerates. Call (619) 393-3877 if you want a roofer to inspect it before it becomes a leak.
Usually, yes. Presidential Shake and Presidential Shake TL are still in production, and the standard color blends are available through San Diego distributors. The challenge is sun fade. A three-year-old Presidential Shake roof has already lightened from the original color. A new bundle will look slightly darker. We can often minimize this by pulling matching shingles from a less visible slope and installing the new material where the difference won’t catch the eye. We’ll tell you before the work starts if a clean match isn’t possible. Call (619) 393-3877 for an assessment.
For repairs, expect most CertainTeed asphalt-shingle repairs in San Diego to run $350 to $900 depending on the scope: a pipe boot replacement might be $350 to $500, a flashing repair at a wall intersection $500 to $800, and a multi-course shingle replacement on a Landmark roof $450 to $900. Full replacement of a Landmark architectural roof in San Diego County typically runs $10,000 to $18,000 depending on home size, slope, and decking condition. Presidential Shake and Grand Manor run higher. Every job gets a written line-item price before work starts. Call (619) 393-3877 for an exact quote, and estimates are free.
