GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible ridge vents throughout San Diego, with most installations running $425 to $780 depending on ridge length and whether we’re replacing an existing vent or cutting new sheathing. Most jobs are done in a single visit, usually two to three hours on the roof. Homeowners typically call us after spotting shingle granules in a gutter near the ridge, noticing a musty attic smell, or seeing daylight through the gable end where the ridge vent should be sealed.
The most common call Greg Holloway gets sounds like this: the attic is hotter than it used to be, or there’s condensation on the underside of the roof deck in winter. Nine times out of ten, the ridge vent is either crushed, the mesh has deteriorated in San Diego’s sun, or a previous contractor installed a vent that didn’t match the GAF shingle profile. We’ll give you the price before we touch your roof, and that price includes matching the vent to your GAF system, not just whatever fits.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF makes several ridge vent lines, and they are not interchangeable. The two you’re most likely to have on a San Diego home are the GAF Cobra Ridge Vent and the GAF SnowCountry Ridge Vent (the SnowCountry version is less common here but we do see it on homes built by out-of-state developers). The Cobra line includes the standard Cobra profile plus the Cobra Exhaust Vent for Metal Roofs, which uses a different base profile entirely.
The compatibility gotcha: GAF ridge vents are engineered to pair with GAF shingles’ exposure height. If your roof has architectural shingles from a different manufacturer, or if someone installed a generic box vent at the ridge, the airflow math changes and the attic doesn’t breathe correctly. When we come out, we check the shingle profile, measure the ridge opening, and tell you whether the existing vent is actually compatible with your GAF roof or whether it’s been underperforming since day one.
OEM is almost always the right call for GAF systems because the vent’s internal baffle is tuned to GAF’s nail line and exposure. We do stock quality aftermarket ridge vents for cases where a homeowner wants a different profile, and we carry GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed parts on the truck so you’re not waiting on a warehouse order.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic temps spike in summer. San Diego’s inland valleys, like Santee and El Cajon, routinely hit 95°F in August. A working ridge vent plus soffit intake should keep your attic within 15 to 20 degrees of outdoor air. If your attic hits 130°F, the vent is either undersized, blocked, or crushed.
- Visible gaps or lifting at the ridge line. Walk out to the street and look along the ridge. If the vent cap is peeling up, flapping, or sagging between rafters, the nails have backed out or the vent material has warped. That’s a water entry point waiting for the next Santa Ana-driven rain.
- Granule buildup in gutters near the roofline. GAF shingles shed a small amount of granules over their life, but concentrated granule loss near the ridge usually means wind-driven rain has been getting under the ridge vent cap and wearing the shingle heads. The vent isn’t sealing.
- Musty smell in the attic or top-floor closets. A failed ridge vent stops exhausting moisture from cooking, showers, and laundry. In San Diego’s marine layer zones, like Point Loma or Ocean Beach, that trapped moisture turns into mildew inside six months.
- Daylight visible through the gable end at the ridge. If you can see light where the roof deck meets the ridge, the vent’s internal filter or mesh has failed, and you now have a direct path for embers, insects, and driven rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, GAF ridge vent replacement or new installation runs $425 to $780 for a standard single story home with 30 to 50 linear feet of ridge. Here’s the breakdown:
- Vent material (GAF Cobra or equivalent): $9 to $14 per 4-foot section
- Labor including tear-off of failed vent and re-nailing: $250 to $420 depending on ridge accessibility and roof pitch
- New cap shingles to match existing GAF color: included in most cases, $30 to $60 if we need to color-match a discontinued shade
- Sheathing repair at the ridge opening: $40 to $80 per section if rot or water damage is present
The price you get from us is written, line by line, before any work starts. It doesn’t change at the end of the job unless we uncover structural damage that requires your approval to proceed. Every ridge vent install carries our written guarantee, and if it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can do safely: check for visible gaps from the ground, note the linear feet of ridge, and take a photo of any lifting or sagging. That’s useful when you call for pricing. What you should not attempt is removing and replacing ridge vent on a two-story home, a steep pitch (anything over 6:12), or any roof with tile or metal adjacent to the ridge. Ridge work means you’re working at the highest, most exposed point of the roof with no wall to brace against, and one wrong step on a 20-year-old San Diego roof deck will send you through the sheathing.
If you’re on a single-story, low-pitch roof and you’re experienced with roofing tools, a ridge vent swap is technically doable. But matching GAF’s nail pattern and getting the cap shingles to seal against the vent profile takes a practiced hand. If you’d rather hand it to someone who does this weekly, call (619) 393-3877 and we’ll get you a written estimate. You’ll know the price before we touch your roof.
FAQs
A GAF Cobra ridge vent typically lasts 15 to 20 years in San Diego’s climate, though the plastic cap can turn brittle after a decade of direct sun exposure, especially on south-facing ridge lines in areas like Chula Vista and National City. If your vent is older than 15 years and you’re seeing any of the failure signs above, plan for replacement rather than patching. Call (619) 393-3877 and we’ll assess what you have.
In most cases, no. Ridge vents are continuous pieces, and a failed section usually means the material has warped or the internal baffle has collapsed, which can’t be rejoined. We occasionally re-nail a section that’s lifted but hasn’t cracked, but that’s a temporary fix. A full replacement of the vent run is the repair that holds.
Most GAF ridge vent replacements in San Diego take two to three hours for a standard roof, including removal of the old vent, inspection of the ridge opening, and installation of the new vent with matched cap shingles. We’ll give you a time window when we schedule, and we show up inside that window.
Yes. Our trucks carry GAF Cobra ridge vent in the most common profiles along with cap shingles in standard GAF colors, plus compatible parts from Owens Corning and CertainTeed. If your color is discontinued or unusual, we’ll source it before the install date so there’s no delay on the day of the job. Call (619) 393-3877 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you exactly what’s needed.
