IKO Ridge Vent Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We install IKO-compatible ridge vent on San Diego homes, and most complete ridge vent installations run $650 – $1,200 depending on your roof’s linear ridge footage, existing shingle condition, and whether the old vent needs full removal. We stock IKO-compatible ridge vent components on the truck, so on most single-story homes the work is done same-day once we’re on site. The call usually starts the same way: you’re up in the attic in August, it feels like a sauna, and you notice the ridge vent baffle is cracked, sagging, or pulling away from the shingles. That’s the part that moves hot air out of your attic, and once it fails, your attic temps climb fast.
Which IKO Models This Applies To
IKO makes two ridge vent lines you’re most likely to find on a San Diego roof: the IKO Armourvent Multi (a rigid, shingle-over vent) and the older IKO Armourvent Standard, which has a narrower profile. The Armourvent Multi is the one we match most often on homes built or re-roofed since roughly 2010. The easiest way to identify what you have: look for the IKO logo printed on the vent’s exposed underside from inside the attic, or measure the width. Armourvent Multi is 11 1/4 inches wide, while the Standard runs about 9 inches. The gotcha we see often: a homeowner installs a generic 9-inch vent on a roof originally cut for the 11 1/4-inch Multi, which leaves the slot under-vented and the shingle overlap too short to seal properly against San Diego’s wind-driven rain. For IKO roofs, we recommend OEM or IKO-spec-matched aftermarket from GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed only when the measurements line up exactly. Tilehurst Roofing San Diego is an independent contractor, not affiliated with IKO, but we stock the compatible parts because they’re what we see on local roofs.

Signs Your IKO Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic heat you can feel through the hallway ceiling. A working ridge vent lets hot air escape continuously. When the baffle collapses or the internal filter clogs with dust and nesting debris, that heat stays trapped and radiates into the living space.
- Shingles lifting at the ridge line. San Diego’s east-county winds, especially out toward Santee and Alpine, catch the edge of a ridge vent whose adhesive strip has dried out. If you can see the vent’s plastic edge from the ground, the seal is gone.
- Dark streaks or water staining on the attic side of the ridge board. This usually means the vent’s end caps or the shingle-over fastening has opened up and moisture is sneaking in during winter rains. By the time you see the stain, the leak has been active for a while.
- Crumbling or brittle plastic around the vent slots. UV exposure in San Diego is relentless. After 12 to 15 years, the exposed plastic on IKO rigid vents gets brittle and starts cracking, especially on south-facing ridge lines in areas like Clairemont or Chula Vista where there’s zero shade.
- You hear whistling or rattling during wind. A loose ridge vent catches wind like a sail. The rattle is the vent body flexing against its fasteners, and it means the fasteners have already started backing out.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical San Diego ranch or two-story home with 30 to 60 linear feet of ridge, a complete IKO-compatible ridge vent replacement runs $650 – $1,200 installed. That includes removing the old vent and any failed fasteners, inspecting the ridge slot and decking underneath, installing the new vent to match the original slot width, re-securing shingles with a proper overlap, and sealing all end caps. If the decking under the vent is rotted from a leak, add $80 – $150 per sheet to replace it, and we’ll show you the damage before we touch it. Our price is written and in your hands before any work starts, and every ridge vent installation is covered by the same written guarantee as all our repairs: if it fails within the guarantee period, Tilehurst Roofing returns at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. You’ll know the price before we touch your roof.

What you can safely do yourself: look at the ridge from the ground with binoculars, check for lifted shingles, and note where the vent is sagging. You can also go into the attic on a cool morning and look up at the vent from underneath for daylight gaps or water stains. What we’d rather you not do: get on a pitched roof with a nail gun and try to reset a ridge vent. Ridge vent installation means pulling the old fasteners, aligning the vent to the slot, and re-sealing shingles so wind-driven rain can’t get under the edge. The work itself is low-tension compared to a spring repair, but the roof is where most DIY jobs go wrong: wrong overlap, wrong fasteners, open end caps. If you want a set of eyes on it before deciding, call (619) 393-3877 and we’ll take a look.
FAQs
An IKO rigid ridge vent in San Diego typically lasts 12 to 18 years, with UV exposure and wind being the two biggest killers. Our coastal neighborhoods see salt air accelerate plastic aging, while inland areas get more heat-cycling. A vent that faces unshaded south sun will age faster than the roof’s shingles.
Sometimes, yes. If only one end cap is loose or a single 4-foot section is cracked, we can splice in a matching section without pulling the rest of the ridge. But if the plastic has gone brittle across multiple sections, patching becomes a losing game and full replacement is the honest recommendation. Call (619) 393-3877 and we’ll tell you which one applies to your roof.
Most ridge vent replacements on a San Diego home take 2 to 4 hours once we’re on site, depending on ridge length and whether decking needs replacing underneath. We’ll give you a time window when we confirm the appointment, and a live person answers every call, 24/7, if you need to adjust it.
Yes. We carry IKO-compatible ridge vent sections, end caps, and fasteners on the truck alongside compatible materials from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. In most cases we can match and complete the installation in one visit. Call (619) 393-3877 for a free estimate.
